The design of the home features elements that maximise the perception of space. For instance, the cavity doors blur the lines between the outdoors and indoors while also allowing the free flow of air. Similarly, strategically placed clerestory windows allow natural light to flow in, while frameless windows and apertures showcase the surrounding courtyards, thus amplifying the space. The interiors are filled with elements made with natural materials and a zen vibe emanates from spaces.
Dakivali
It blurs the boundaries between the built and unbuilt through courtyards and verandahs, as is seen in traditional Maharashtrian homes,” says Patil. In a bid to make this village home sustainable, the firm applied several design approaches. They ensured that all spaces had cross-ventilation to keep the home ambient and airy throughout the year—a must for the region's tropical climate. Optimal amount of sunlight was ensured by the use of passive solar strategies like appropriate size of openings with the right overhangs. They made provisions for recycling water through phytoremediation, and harnessing storm water in recharge pits. The terrace is painted white to reduce heat gain, and plastered walls and Indian kota stone flooring give this home an eco-friendly touch.
